Try a New Path for Healthier Living. What Have You Got to Lose? "It's essential to keep an open mind, and be willing--better yet, eager to try new things." Michael Abrash Mary, a friend of mine, has been battling a variety of health problems. Her visits to the Doctor almost always ended with a new prescription and a suggestion to lose weight and get more exercise. Mary knew the doctor was right; her weight had been an issue for some time. She took the pills the doctor gave her but continued to walk down the same old path and keep her familiar habits. Can you empathize with my friend Mary? Have you been experiencing health issues? Have you been putting off making the needed changes? What's been standing in your way? Is it not serious enough for you to take action on? It wasn't long before Mary experienced additional health symptoms which led her to new doctor. After running a myriad of tests, the doctor explained her blood sugar levels were extremely high and cautioned her, "You are headed for Diabetes, Mary. That could mean more serious health concerns. Besides the heart risks she could be faced with insulin injections, kidney failure, blindness, and even amputation of a limb." The Doctor was stern, "I want to see you back in two months, Mary. You must lose some weight and start getting more exercise.” “Ok,” Agreed Mary. “But can you tell me what kind of diet to go on?” The doctor's response was blunt, “Oh I think we all know what we should and shouldn’t be eating. And we certainly know how to get adequate exercise.” Don't you want to just give Mary a hug? I know I do. How many times in my life have I known what I should do to improve my health? It wasn't the knowledge it lacked, it was the motivation and the perseverance that I lacked. This time it would be different, thought Mary. Her plan was to stock up on lots of pre- made salads. After all eating lots of greens seemed like the latest health thing. Salads would be easy to buy, and it wouldn’t require any meal decisions. She would eat salads for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not much prep time required and very little cleanup to do. It seemed like a great plan! When I heard about Mary's plan it reminded me of the many crash diets and quick fixes that I had tried in my life. Mary lost 20 pounds by the time of her next doctor’s visit. Blood sugar levels were down considerably, and she was feeling much better! The Doctor was pleased and said to keep doing what she was doing and come back in another two months. Does your own experience tell you where this is going? A diet of only salads, while it can be a great short term weight loss strategy, cannot be sustained! I spoke with Mary recently. She is struggling, and often failing, to stay on the salad diet. Her weight is coming back quickly. She's also experiencing some of his previous troubling symptoms. ……… It is not difficult to spot the problems others are having. We can easily see it because we have been there ourselves. We get motivated to make a change, and then we are off to the races where we shoot out of the gate full speed, at least for a while. And where does this strategy usually leave us? Right where we started out, right? When will we learn that doing things the same old way gets us the same old results?
